CHINO, Calif.—A portion of the silicone rubber business has gone retro, according to Tim Angle. Silicone elastomers were sold on a custom basis back in the 1970s, said the director of the Momentive Custom Elastomers business of Momentive Performance Materials Inc. But in the 1980s, that all changed, when most of the large silicone suppliers sold general purpose bases and educated the customers on how to customize them for their own use.
