MARICOPA, Ariz. (Nov. 20, 2009)—Yulex Corp., manufacturer of hypoallergenic guayule natural rubber, won the “Green Innovator of the Year” award from the Arizona Technology Council.
Yulex received the award at the Governor's Celebration of Innovation annual gala in Phoenix.
Based in Maricopa in the Phoenix suburbs, Yulex holds the exclusive license from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to market natural rubber made from USDA's patented method of extracting latex from guayule, a desert shrub native to Mexico and the Southwestern U.S.
While guayule rubber's hypoallergenicity makes it especially valuable in the production of medical devices, the rubber can also be used to shoes, apparel and sporting goods, according to the company.
Evenutally guayule rubber could be used to make tires, Yulex said.
