BRUSSELS, Belgium (Nov. 10, 2009)—More than 95 percent of all tires scrapped in Europe in 2008 entered the recycling and recovery routes, according to figures from a tire industry trade association.
The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers' Association said the percentage of tires sent to landfills in the European Union has been declining steadily since 1994, from 60 percent that year to the 5 percent in 2008.
The ETRMA said about 35 percent of scrap tires are used for energy recovery, while 40 percent of the tires are disposed of in material recycling.
