WASHINGTON (Nov. 6, 2009)—The Rubber Manufacturers Association has declared June 6-12, 2010, as the ninth annual National Tire Safety Week.
Part of its “Be Tire Smart - Play Your PART” program, the effort is designed to help drivers learn the how to ensure their tires are in proper working condition. The activity involves tire manufacturers and retailers who educate consumers about proper tire care and maintenance, the RMA said.
The association provides tire retailers, auto dealers and automotive repair shops with free brochures and other materials, and more than 21,000 of them participated in the 2009 event. Auto dealers, safety advocates and state government agencies are among the partners in the effort, which was launched in the wake of the 6.5 million Firestone tire recall of August 2000.
The RMA released a survey of more than 5,400 vehicles this year that showed 20 percent had at least one underinflated tire, which wastes fuel, causes tires to wear prematurely and is a safety hazard.
