AKRON (Sept. 28, 2009)—The University of Akron's Department of Polymer Science has named Hwi Joong Kim, chief technology officer and chief production officer for Hankook Tire Co. Ltd., its outstanding alumnus for 2009.
Kim, with Hankook for more than three decades, was honored both for his work with Hankook and for teaching tire engineering in his native South Korea and fostering recruits to UA's polymer department.
At Hankook, Kim is involved in the firm's manufacturing plants in South Korea, China and Hungary. He also allocates time for teaching tire engineering and polymer science to engineers, chemists and technicians and has arranged for financial support for nine polymer scientists and mechanical engineers to earn their master's or doctorate degrees at UA.
During his time with Hankook, Kim has been involved in moving the company from predominantly a domestic bias-ply tire maker to a globally active firm with plants in three countries. Hankook's global capacity now exceeds 225,000 units a day.
He will be honored at ceremonies at UA the morning of Oct. 2.
