LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 16, 2009)—Negotiators for the United Steelworkers and Bridgestone Americas Inc. appear to be close to a tentative contract agreement covering about 4,500 workers at seven tire and rubber product plants.
According to a USW Web site, a framework for a tentative accord was reached early the morning of Sept. 16. Union officials are working to finalize the details of the agreement, the site said, and will be returning to their respective home sites from Louisville—where negotiations have been taking place since June—sometime the week of Sept. 21.
The original contract between the two sides expired July 18, but was extended day-to-day.
Steelworkers staffing Goodyear's seven unionized tire plants are in the midst of a vote on a new four-year pact. Ratification votes there should be complete by Sept. 18.
A new three-year deal between the USW and Michelin North America Inc.'s BFGoodrich tire manufacturing unit was ratified last month.
