WASHINGTON (June 18, 2009)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued its proposal on labeling tires with fuel efficiency ratings.
NHTSA issued the proposed rule in response to a provision in the Energy Independence and Security Act, which Congress passed in December 2007. Contained in the document is a proposed requirement for labeling tires with ratings for fuel efficiency (rolling resistance), durability (treadwear) and safety (traction).
The Rubber Manufacturers Association and its tire manufacturing members are still studying the 148-page text.
