TRAISKIRCHEN, Austria (June 17, 2009)—Seven years after phasing out tire production at the former Semperit Reifen plant in Traiskirchen, Continental A.G. has decided to close the site, a rubber mixing operation, with the loss of 195 jobs.
Conti said rubber mixing would stop by year-end. It previously said it will close steel cord calendering operations there at the same time. The company said a few administrative jobs might remain.
The firm said its work support foundations, set up in 2002 when the company ended tire manufacturing there, are still in place and will support the remaining employees.
Conti blamed the collapse in demand for passenger tires in Europe for its decision to close the facility. The company did not disclose what costs it anticipates the closing will entail.
