AKRON (June 12, 2009)—Goodyear has landed a large contract as the exclusive supplier of key tire fitments for a versatile and widely used transport vehicle.
Sealy, Texas-headquartered BAE Tactical Vehicle Systems picked Goodyear's 395/85R20 MV/T tire as the exclusive fitment for the company's 2.5-to 10-ton capacity Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles, used primarily by the U.S. Army, a Goodyear spokesman said.
The tire maker, which has been servicing the military for about 100 years and said it is the largest producer of military tires in the U.S., will manufacture and supply about 100,000 tires to be delivered through 2010, he said. The tires will be made at the firm's Danville, Va., factory.
The pact continues what Goodyear has been doing for the military over the years, the spokesman said. The company did not give financial details about the deal.
The FMTV is based on a common cab, chassis and internal component platform, he said, while the 16 production models in the line vary by payload and mission requirements.
The vehicles perform long haul, unit resupply and other missions in combat, combat support and combat service support units, he said. More than 53,000 FMTVs and trailers have been produced since 1991, according to the tire maker.
Making the tires for BAE Tactical “signifies an important step forward in Goodyear's working relationship with one of the world's premier providers of military vehicles,” said Kris Fettig, the firm's military original equipment account executive.
