POTOSI, Mo. (May 11, 2009)—Purcell Tire & Rubber Co. has purchased the off-the-road tire retreading assets of Goodyear's Wingfoot Commercial Tire business unit.
Purcell said it will consolidate the capacity of Wingfoot's plants in Salisbury, N.C., and Winona, Minn., into its own facility in Potosi. That move will affect 35 jobs.
The companies didn't disclose the terms of the sale, which closed May 8.
The deal combines the capacities of the two largest OTR tire retreaders in the U.S. Purcell processed about 9 million pounds of tread rubber in its OTR retreading operations last year, while Goodyear's consumption was about 8 million pounds.
The firms didn't say how soon the equipment would be moved.
A Goodyear spokesman said the deal reflects the company's desire to make the best use of its assets. Purcell is a longtime Goodyear dealer.
