RICHMOND, Va. (March 17, 2009)—Virginia is removing the remaining scrap tires from the last known illegal tire dump in the western part of the state.
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality plans to remove nearly 20,000 tires from the site March 17 with the help of contractors. The state and property owners have cleaned up 3.6 million scrap tires in western Virginia since 1993.
The DEQ started its waste tire cleanup program in 1993 by surveying sites to identify and quantify tire dumps. Tires collected typically are shredded and used in civil engineering project and as crumb rubber for recycled products and fuel.
