ORANGE, Calif. (Jan. 27, 2009) — Stephen E. Barton, president and CEO of Esterline Technologies Corp.'s Engineered Materials Group and the 2008 Rubber & Plastics News Rubber Industry Executive of the Year, died Jan. 24 at his home in Orange after a short battle with cancer.
Barton, 62, had a 40-year career in the rubber industry, including stints with Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., BTR P.L.C. and Esterline.
Joining Esterline's Kirkhill Rubber Co. as president in 1998, he oversaw the merger of the operation with TA Manufacturing, built an award-winning lean production environment and helped expand the combined companies within the Engineered Materials unit to nearly $300 million in sales.
In his spare time, Barton enjoyed golf, sailing, reading, cards, puzzles, travel and spending time with his family. He leaves behind his wife of 25 years, Betty; three married children; and six grandchildren.
