TRENTON, N.J. (Jan. 15, 2009) — Tire dealers could be required to tell customers the age of the tires they sell, under a proposal of regulation issued in December by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
Tires decay over time and can be dangerous if installed as “new” after sitting in a warehouse for years, the division said in the preamble to the notice.
Besides requiring dealers to inform consumers of tire age, the proposed rule would require dealers to post notices detailing the dangers of placing older tires on a vehicle; to give consumers a document listing tire identification numbers and explaining how tire age can be determined from those numbers; and to include tire age on sales documents for customers to sign or initial.
The division accepted comments on the notice through Dec. 31.
