NORFOLK, Va. (Dec. 8, 2008) — Michelin Aircraft Tire Co., a division of Michelin North America Inc., marked a milestone Dec. 2 with the delivery of its 250,000th aircraft tire to the U.S. Navy under its Performance-Based Logistics contract.
The Michelin tire for the nose landing gear of a U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornet was presented to the U.S. Naval Air Station-Oceana in Norfolk.
Michelin netted the U.S. Navy PBL contract in 2001 and the tire maker in turn selected Lockheed Martin as its logistics partner for the program. The contract requires Michelin-Lockheed Martin to deliver aircraft tires anywhere in the continental U.S. in less than two days and elsewhere in the world, including deployed aircraft carriers, in less than four days.
Michelin said it has maintained an on-time delivery rate of more than 98 percent with zero backorders.
