GURGAON India (Dec. 8, 2008) — Apollo Tyres Ltd. has locked workers out of a plant in Kalamassery, in southern India.
The plant is owned by PTL Enterprises but is on long-term lease to Apollo for its entire output. Prior to the lock-out, Apollo removed most of the finished tires from the plant as a precaution to help it meet its export orders. The firm said any pending export orders will be met from its other manufacturing facilities.
Employing 1,100 workers, the Kalamassery plant produces 87 metric tons of cross-ply light truck, truck/bus and farm tires for Apollo Tyres. A majority of this production is earmarked for Apollo's export markets.
Apollo said employees have been resisting management efforts to increase efficiency for the past few months. The company said some workers halted production Dec. 4 and others prevented trucks from making their deliveries Dec. 5.
