MARIETTA, Ga. (Nov. 12, 2008) – Columbian Chemicals Co. said it will shut down its Marshall, W.Va., carbon black plant because of overcapacity and an uncertain business outlook.
The firm said it is re-evaluating its assets in North America. Kevin Boyle, president and CEO of the supplier, said the action will better align its carbon black capacity on the continent with market demand.
About 55 jobs will be eliminated by the decision, the company said. The plant will close on or about Jan. 31.
Boyle said Columbian's remaining plants in the U.S. are well-positioned to continue to operate.
The closure will cut out 50,000 metric tons of annual carbon black capacity.
