ATLANTA (Oct. 27, 2008) — Goodyear awarded $40,000 worth of scholarships to six high school seniors during a NASCAR pre-race ceremony Oct. 25 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Alex Stephens, a senior at Sonoraville High School in Calhoun, Ga., received the top award of $30,000. The Akron-based tire maker selected him from more than 60 minority high school students participating in its Goodyear Racing and Diversity program for at-track NASCAR experience and race weekend internships during the past year.
To participate in the program, students are required to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and be in good standing in their school and community. Upon selection, students are paired with career mentors in areas of interest to work with them during two six-hour days that make up a race weekend internship.
The following students earned $2,000 scholarships: Adriana Harris, Dover, Del.; Ashli Moore, Dallas; Desiree Slaughter, Detroit; Rodrigo Bernal, Daytona Beach, Fla.; and Stephanie Vasquez, Los Angeles.
