XENIA, Ohio (May 30, 2008) — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will allow cement maker CEMEX to temporarily modify its Fairborn plant in Xenia to accommodate a test burn of tire-derived fuel at the site.
Ohio EPA Director Chris Korleski denied CEMEX's petition last November because the company had not resolved findings of violations that the U.S. EPA issued the Fairborn plant in March 2005.
However, after CEMEX provided Korleski with further information, Korleski decided on May 16 to allow the test burn to proceed.
The Green Environmental Coalition, an Ohio environmental group, is protesting Korleski's decision and asking Greene County residents to write to the Ohio EPA in protest. Officials of the Fairborn plant could not immediately be reached for comment.
