Various fillers, including fumed silica, have long been used in silicone rubber compounds to improve a variety of properties. Fumed silica has especially been used to control rheology and to improve properties such as tensile strength, tear and abrasion resistance. Due to its fine particle size, fumed silica can also produce translucent or even clear silicone rubber films. This paper discusses the improvements in the transparency of those silicone rubber films when using a specially prepared structure modified products such as AEROSIL® 200 SP or AEROSIL® 300 SP fumed silica, without the sacrifice of mechanical properties.
