MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio—The more than 100-year history of Johnson Rubber Co. will come to an end April 23 when its two Ohio manufacturing plants cease production. The facts of how the maker of automotive and industrial rubber products failed, costing roughly 500 employees their jobs, are fairly obvious. The “why” behind it, however, isn't as clear cut, subject to the markedly different perspectives of those intimately involved with the firm.
