HNBR is a heat- and oil-resistant elastomer produced by the selective hydrogenation of acrylonitrile butadiene copolymer. In addition to its good heat, oil, fuel and chemical resistance, HNBR provides a good combination of mechanical properties, tear strength and abrasion resistance which are well suited for conditions encountered in the oilfield environment. Therban HNBR can be used in a wide variety of oil field components, including stators, packers, blow-out preventors and drill bit seals. Relative to other elastomers, it can potentially extend the service life and the replacement cycles for these components. Furthermore, specialized HNBR polymers with unique properties are now available. New advanced technology grades have been developed which provide unprecedented low viscosity, improved processability and permit new compounding latitude. Also, incorporation of carboxylate technology provides improvements in abrasion, adhesion and tear strength properties which are not attained with HNBR. This presentation will illustrate the performance profile and property improvements of HNBR in various oilfield components and provide examples of compounding techniques.
