THERBAN hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) is a specialty elastomer used in demanding engineering applications such as the automotive, heavy duty, and oil well markets. It has an excellent combination of heat, oil and abrasion resistance in addition to its high mechanical strength and very good dynamic and compression set properties. This paper will explore the use of New Novel Therban AT (low Mooney viscosity) polymers with Ultra-High Acrylonitrile content (up to 50%) for Alternative Fuel (Biodiesel, FlexFuel) applications. These new products combine three unique performance characteristics: a) the ultra high acrylonitrile content for maximum fluid and fuel resistance, b) the benefits of improved processability (easier mixing, faster injection molding cycles, faster extrusion rates, and smoother surfaces/edges of extruded parts), and c) the versatility in compounding such as the elimination or reduction of plasticizer (improving performance) or the increase in filler levels (improve permeation resistance and lower swell). These new Therban polymers provide a cost-effective alternative to over-engineered FKM parts. The paper will also present the LANXESS technology for improving the long-term heat resistance and compression set of HNBR vulcanizates.
