    Goodyear wastes no time in naming a plant where it would reduce tire-building capacity in addition to its Tyler, Texas, facility, after signing a contract with the United Steelworkers. The company announces Jan. 4 it will discontinue tire production at its Valleyfield, Quebec, plant.

    Michelin gives the pink slip to an auto and truck tire factory in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

    Avon Automotive Inc. decides to close its Manton, Mich., molded rubber parts plant and shift the site's automotive parts production operation to Mexico.

    Dawson Manufacturing Co. moves to close its plant in Dawson, Ga., and shift production to the firm's Benton Harbor, Mich., facility.

    W.H. Salisbury & Co. shuts the doors of its White Rubber Corp. operation, which it purchased a year earlier.

    Chardon Rubber Co. closes its St. Joseph, Mich., plant and consolidates that manufacturing at its Chardon, Ohio, facility.

    Cabot Corp. decides to close its Waverly, W.Va., carbon black plant in March 2008, although shipments from the facility will continue through the middle of the year.

    Michelin North America Inc. ends bias-ply BFGoodrich agricultural tires production and will offer customers BFG radials as a ``value-priced'' replacement tire option.

    Delphi Corp. moves to shut down a brake hose and engine mount plant in Dayton following ratification of a contract with the United Steelworkers local.

    SSL International P.L.C. closes a Durex condom factory in Rubi, Spain, and a technical center in Cambridge, England, transferring production to Thailand and India.

    Consort Medical P.L.C. announces it will close one plant, lay off workers and consolidate part of its business during the next 12 months because of contractual issues between two other companies.

    Bridgestone Firestone de Mexico S.A. de C.V. plans to close its Mexico City tire plant in the second half of 2008 because of an inability to make desired expansions and a lease ending.
