TURIN, Italy (Oct. 17, 2007) — Pirelli S.p.A. has signed a five-year agreement with the Politecnico di Torino covering joint research in process technology and product development in the tire sector.
In process technology, the research team will work on the future generation of Pirelli's MIRS (Modular Integrated Robotized System) and CCM (Continuous Compound Mixing) advanced method for continuous production of mixes.
On the products front, Pirelli and Politecnico di Torino will focus on development of the cyber tire, an ·intelligent tireö able to dialogue with the vehicle and designed for greater road safety.
Both firms noted the existence of Pirelli's previously announced plan to consolidate its separate car and truck tire plants in Turin into one ·state-of-the-art technological and industrial centerö for car and truck tires at the site of its current truck tire plant in Turin's Settimo district as a strong basis for this agreement.
The agreeement also foresees Pirelli's contribution to funding of a chair for a professor of mechanical engineering at the Politecnico.
