ISSAQUAH, Wash. (Oct. 17, 2007) — Costco Wholesale Corp., one of the nation's largest merchandisers, has announced it will stop selling studded winter tires in all its stores except those in Alaska.
"This is an environmentally responsible move," said Pat McClintock, tire buyer for Costco. "Also, studded tires have represented declining sales for us, so those two factors together dictated this decision. We'll sell out our remaining inventory, and then we won't order any more."
Costco will continue to sell winter tires in which consumers can elect to place studs themselves, McClintock said.
