BIRMINGHAM, England (Oct. 8, 2007) — Dunlop Aircraft Tyres Ltd. is planning to set up an aircraft tire retreading venture in China by early 2009 with two Chinese aerospace companies.
The joint venture — with Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd. and Taikoo (Xiamen) Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd. — would be located in Jinjiang, Fujian Province, with Dunlop Aircraft the minority partner, the Birmingham-based aircraft tire maker and retreader said. The three companies recently signed a memorandum of understanding on the project.
This would mark a stepped-up presence for the company in Asia, where penetration of the market has been restricted to date as retreading from Europe is uneconomic for airlines located in the Asia Pacific rim region, according to Dunlop Aircraft Chairman Ian Edmondson.
The firm makes both new tires and retreads at its plant in Birmingham.
