WINKLER, Manitoba (Oct. 5, 2007) — Tire Recycling Corp., one of two scrap tire processing firms in Manitoba, went into receivership after the provincial government refused to give the company a $1 million loan to keep it afloat.
TRC President Paul Courteau said the province doesn't pay tire processors enough per tire to keep them solvent. Courteau said he was soliciting the government for last-minute help to keep TRC open. "A lot of people tell me they're sympathetic, but a lot of people in government couldn't care less," he said.
Tire Stewardship Manitoba, which succeeded the Manitoba Tire Stewardship Board earlier this year as the province's scrap tire management entity, collects approximately $2.2 million annually from the province's scrap tire fee of $3 per each new tire sold.
