IISRP elects 3 affiliate members
Chemical Market Associates Inc., FMC Corp.'s Lithium Division and Calumet Lubricants have joined the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers as affiliated members.
The companies come into the organization of the world's SR makers in a new class that the IISRP board of directors approved in July, said James L. McGraw, managing director and CEO of the Houston-based group.
Bill Hyde, director-C4 Olefins & Elastomers, will serve as the liaison to the group for CMAI, and George Sandor, marketing director for FMC Lithium, will handle that job for his company, which is a catalyst supplier.
Jay Zurawski, a technical sales representative for processing oil supplier Calumet Lubricants, will be that company's liaison with the SR institute.
3 tire makers plan price increases
Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., Hankook Tire America Corp. and Toyo Tire (U.S.A.) Corp. all plan to increase prices, effective Oct. 1.
Cooper is raising prices of its passenger and light truck tires by up to 4 percent. The increases will vary across lines.
Hankook said it will raise prices up to 4 percent on its full line of passenger, high performance and light truck tires. The firm said the amount of the increase will vary by product line and size.
Toyo said it will increase prices by 3.5 percent on its consumer products.
The increases are a result of continued increases in raw material, energy and transportation costs, the three tire makers said.
Avon gives away safety masks
Avon Protection Systems Inc., part of Avon Rubber P.L.C., awarded the Bluffton, Ind., police department 20 masks, one for each member of the unit.
The C50 respirator masks were given out as part of a contest celebrating the launch of the masks, which include chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear approved filters.
Project aims to boost guayule yield
Yulex Corp. has joined Mendel Biotechnology and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in a joint effort to increase the yield and biomass of guayule rubber.
The agreement between the companies and the USDA's Agricultural Research Service Biotechnology calls for the development and field testing of proprietary guayule plants with enhanced natural rubber latex yields and increased biomass, Yulex said. Mendel Biotechnology is a closely held private company involved in genetic modification of plants.
Haltec joins Get Nitrogen Institute
Haltec Corp. has joined the Get Nitrogen Institute to promote the benefits of efficient, accurate and safe tire inflation, the firm said.
Haltec said its line of automatic tire inflation systems adapts to any nitrogen system and provides a tire inflation and maintenance database.
Excel buys Chase Elastomer UK
Excel Polymers L.L.C. has acquired Chase Elastomer UK Ltd. for an undisclosed sum.
The purchase-announced by John Quinn, Excel president and CEO, in a letter to customers-was made by EXLP Global (UK) Ltd., the United Kingdom subsidiary of Solon, Ohio-based Excel Polymers. The deal follows the purchase in August by Excel of another British rubber mixer, Vita Calender.
