GREENVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 12) — Michelin North America Inc. is warning consumers in the U.S. and Canada that prize notifications sent in the company's name to people in at least nine states is a scam.
Michelin said it learned of the scam from some consumers. The letters claim to be "consumer prize award notifications," the company said. The letters instruct the recipient to deposit the enclosed check then write a new personal check to cover taxes and administrative fees associated with the prize. Recipients are told they then will receive another check for their winnings.
The checks are fraudulent and Michelin has no involvement, the company said.
