REGINA, Saskatchewan (Aug. 24) — The Saskatchewan Department of Highways and Transportation is working with the Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corp. to pave 32 kilometers of Saskatchewan roads with rubberized asphalt made with tires discarded in Saskatchewan.
Work has begun on three separate paving projects involving 20 kilometers of the Trans Canada Highway near the Alberta border; four kilometers on Highway 11 at Chamberlain, Saskatchewan; and eight kilometers on Highway 11 at Davidson, Saskatchewan.
A joint project two years ago paved some 20 kilometers of Highway 11 with rubberized asphalt. Rubberized asphalt has a 30-year life cycle, compared with 15 years for conventional asphalt, and also offers significant highway noise reduction, said Theresa McQuoid, SSTC executive director.
