Kraiburg expands capacity
Kraiburg TPE GmbH & Co. K.G. has hiked its U.S. production capacity for thermoplastic elastomer compounds.
Kraiburg said it began operating new equipment at its Duluth, Ga., plant on June 1 that increases by 30 percent the factory's capacity to produce hydrogenated styrene block copolymers. The compounds are used by processors to make products for the automotive, consumer and industrial goods markets.
Employment at the site has grown to 50 from 15 since it opened because of increases in production, the firm said.
Court ruling prompts bill
A U.S. House of Representatives committee has passed a bill to change pay discrimination reporting requirements in response to a U.S. Supreme Court decision in favor of Goodyear and against a retired supervisor.
The House Education and Labor Committee on June 27 passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, named after the former supervisor at Goodyear's plant in Gadsden, Ala. She had sued the company for gender-based pay discrimination that happened early in her nearly 20-year career at the factory, but lost when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled she'd missed a deadline.
The bill would allow a plaintiff to file a claim within 180 days of the person's most recent paycheck and allow them to recover back pay up to two years preceeding the filing of the charge, which was Ledbetter's argument.
Michelin opens tread plant
Michelin opened a Michelin Retread Technologies tread manufacturing plant in Queretaro, Mexico, on July 9.
The new plant is adjacent to Michelin's current Mexican headquarters and a passenger tire facility. The tire treads that will be produced at the factory are specially designed for use in retreading commercial truck tires through Michelin's proprietary process, according to the company.
The facility cost $40 million to build.
IRSG, IISRP team up
The International Rubber Study Group and the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers have released a joint forecast of demand for natural and synthetic rubbers.
The study is the result of cooperation between the two groups to develop a five-year forecast of demand for major types of SR in key consuming regions of the world.
The report is available only to IRSG and IISRP members.
Plant upgrade planned
Rhein Chemie Rheinau GmbH will spend about $9.6 million to modernize and build new production facilities at its Mannhein, Germany, operation, while cutting 70 jobs at the site.
The restructuring will save the firm about $6.9 million annually, Rhein Chemie said, and follows negotiations with employee representatives.
The Lanxess A.G. subsidiary said the action will strengthen the firm's core operation.
