NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 25) — The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is awarding each county in the state a total of $4.2 million in waste tire grants this year.
Paid for by the state´s Waste Tire Fund, the grants will help Tennessee counties to process scrap tires into useful products, such as tire-derived fuel, rubberized asphalt, molded rubber products and civil engineering projects.
Davidson County, which is the metropolitan Nashville area, received the largest single grant — $480,000 — based on reimbursement of $70 per ton of scrap tires processed in the county. Tennessee recycles an estimated 60,000 tons of scrap tires annually, the DEC said.
