JACKSON, Ga. (May 21) — A 39-year-old worker at the Tires Inc. crumb rubber processing center in Jackson died May 16 from burns he suffered the previous day at a massive fire at the plant.
David Newberry, chief of the Butts County, Ga., fire department, said the department was withholding the victim's name pending notification of next of kin.
The department hasn't determined the source of the fire, which burned for 24 hours, or assigned a dollar value to the loss.
Newberry said, however, that Tires Inc.'s portion of the building, which it shared with two other tenants was "a 100-percent loss," as was the equipment inside.
The fire also did major damage to about 200 piles of shredded rubber on the property, each about 30 to 40 feet high, Newberry said. GreenMan Technologies Inc., which previously operated the Jackson plant, divested its Georgia holdings in March 2006 and sublet the building to Tires Inc. and the other tenants.
