JACKSON, Gal (May 18) — Firefighters put out a massive fire at the Tires Inc. crumb rubber processing facility in Jackson that burned for 24 hours after its start May 15, according to the Butts County, Ga., fire department.
Authorities were still completing the report on the fire, a department spokesman said, but the blaze did considerable damage to the building, the equipment inside and an estimated 20 to 30 tons of ground rubber.
GreenMan Technologies Inc., which sublet the Jackson facility to Tires Inc., carries adequate insurance on the property as a condition of its primary lease, a GreenMan statement stated. Savage, Minn.-based GreenMan divested its Georgia tire recycling operations in March 2006.
Previously, a March 2003 fire in the waste wire processing portion of the Jackson facility forced GreenMan to close waste wire operations there for more than a year and a half.
