LINCOLN, Neb. (April 23) — The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality has awarded $1.77 million to support 93 tire recycling and cleanup projects across the state, the agency has announced.
Roughly half the money, the DEQ said, will go toward 41 "Amnesty Day" collections to allow individuals, farms and businesses to get rid of about 840,000 scrap tires.
Those tires will be ground into crumb rubber for playground surfaces, running tracks and artificial turf, the agency said.
Much of the rest of the money will go to public schools across Nebraska to reimburse them for installing rubber turf for their athletic fields, the DEQ said.
