GURGAON, India (April 16) — Apollo Tyres Ltd. has built India´s first branded retread at a new plant in Kundli, India, that will go into commercial production in May.
The DuraTyre truck retread also will be produced at four or five similar retread facilities in the future, the Indian tire maker said. These sites will be close to large transportation hubs, ensuring they are near the commercial vehicle customer.
By the end of 2007, Apollo aims to increase production at the Kundli site four-fold, according to Onkar S. Kanwar, the firm´s chairman and managing director.
The company said retreading is a low-technology, small-scale business in India, and lacks warranties. Apollo´s goal is to change that with its highly automated operations, like the Kundli facility. The tire maker´s strategy is to bring the DuraTyre to the northern India market initially, and then gradually across India.
