WASHINGTON (March 23) — April 20 is the deadline to comment to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on how best to incorporate electronic tire registration into tire registration regulations.
In earlier comments, the Rubber Manufacturers Association, the Tire Industry Association, the National Automobile Dealer Association and private registration firm National Tire Registry Recall.com all advocated an electronic alternative to the current paper registration form. Only CIMS Inc., the oldest private tire registration company, argued that electronic registration was unnecessary and would only confuse consumers.
NHTSA itself left no doubt on where it stands on the issue in its March 21 "Federal Register" notice. "Many TIA members endorse electronic registration and are already doing so," the agency said. "NHTSA should adopt the changes recommended by RMA as quickly as possible."
