TRELLEBORG, Sweden (Feb. 6) –- Trelleborg A.B.'s automotive unit has opened negotiations with union representatives with the intention of closing its West Thurrock, England, auto parts plant.
The company said it wants to end manufacturing of acoustic dampening components by the end of 2007, and transfer production to other European sites. As many as 150 workers, including 40 salaried employees, of the staff of 170 could be laid off. The firm plans to retain a local sales office at the site.
Trelleborg said it will assist affected employees in finding employment, in cooperation with the Employee Consultative Committee.
The West Thurrock plant is included in the Fluid & Acoustic Solutions business unit and manufactures polymer-based vehicle components, such as noise-absorbing products.
Trelleborg said it estimates the move will cost about $19.9 million before taxes.
