GREENVILLE, S.C. (Jan. 25) — Michelin, already the supplier of most tires to the U.S. Army, has won a 10-year, $1.7 billion contract to provide ground tires to the military.
The Defense Supply Center-Columbus, Ohio, picked Michelin Americas Truck Tries to manage the wholesale supply, storage and distribution of all U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine wheeled vehicle tires. The Defense Supply Center will retain only the contracting function for tires used by the military, Michelin said.
The tire maker recently was awarded a more-than $700 million contract for military tires. During the invasion of Iraq, Michelin said it invested $16 million to meet the increase in demand in military tire production.
