The requirements for a material to combust are heat, fuel, and oxygen. Limiting the interaction of a material with at least one of these requirements will impede the combustion process and impart a level of flame resistance. This is achieved by modifying the composition of a material to include chemicals that specifically target impedance of the combustion process. The level of flame resistance required from a material is specific to the end application and can be measured by one of the many test methods available. Silicone rubber is often selected as the design elastomer because of its excellent flame resistance and low smoke toxicity.
