ROME, Ga. (Dec. 21) — Pirelli Tyre S.p.A. will not compete in the American LeMans Series in 2007, citing the high cost of supplying only a few teams.
Pirelli provided tires this past season to the Prodrive Aston Martin and Panoz teams in the ALMS, scoring five GT1 class wins with Prodrive and one GT2 win with Panoz.
Internationally, Pirelli-shod race cars won three GT racing crowns in Europe.
In general, Pirelli´s motorsports plans for 2007 and beyond are still being developed as it restructures its motorsports activity in a new business unit.
"It may be a painful sacrifice to make in 2007," said Paul Hembery, Pirelli´s motorsports director, "particularly after our successful 2006 experiences and particularly because 2007 is Pirelli´s centenary year in motorsport. But the lower level of on-track activity both in Europe and U.S. is intended to assist our ongoing product development and R&D programs, which are to be focused on FIA GT and on a new raft of programs for 2008 that we hope to announce as we go through 2007, some of which will certainly be U.S.-oriented."
