RANCHI, India (Nov. 14) — German bead-wire maker Gustav Wolf Seil und Drahtwerke GmbH & Co. K.G. and India´s Usha Martin Ltd. are adding bead-wire capacity and expanding steel-cord capacity at their steel-cord joint venture in Ranchi.
The joint venture partners are building a dedicated bead-wire facility at Ranchi in two phases: 15,000 metric tons per year in 12 to 18 months and an additional 15,000 tons to come on stream 24 months after Phase 1 is completed. The investment is $8.9 million, and the project will use Gustav Wolf´s product know-how and process technology.
The firms´ joint venture, Gustav Wolf Speciality Cord Ltd., will raise steel cord capacity 50 percent to 3,600 tons per year.
Usha Martin estimated the Indian market for bead wire at 72,000 tons a year. Tire bead wire is a value-added product for the joint venture; a ton of bead wire costs as much as twice as a ton of steel from which it is made, according to Usha Martin.
