TICONDEROGA, N.Y. (Oct. 6) — International Paper Co. will begin a two-week test burn of tire-derived fuel at its Ticonderoga plant Nov. 6, according to the company.
International Paper received a final permit for the test burn last month from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency declined to rule on the matter.
At its peak, the test burn will consume about three tons of TDF per hour, or about 10 percent of the Ticonderoga facility´s energy needs measured in BTUs, the company said.
Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas, alarmed at tires being burned across Lake Champlain from his state, has vowed to pursue all legal means to stop the test burn.
