WASHINGTON (Aug. 14) — The National Traffic Safety Administration is investigating General Motors Inc. for alleged steering knuckle failures in Hummer H2 sports-utility vehicles, model years 2003-2005.
The alleged failures may lead in turn to front wheels falling off the vehicles. The agency is also investigating Country Coach International for alleged front tire failure in its Intrigue and Allure motor coaches, model years 1995-2000.
Both investigations are engineering analyses, which NHTSA instigates if preliminary evaluations occasioned by consumer complaints unearth possible evidence of a defect. However, the agency recently ended a preliminary evaluation of 2004-2006 VHD Volvo trucks with aluminum wheels, finding no evidence that alleged wheel separations indicated a defect trend.
