FAIRLAWN, Ohio (April 3) — Omnova Solutions Inc.´s Performance Chemicals facility in Mogadore, Ohio, has been presented with a 2005 Award for Excellence in Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Performance from the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council.
The award recognizes effective, vital and sustainable programs that have resulted in measurable enhancements to company performance, and the commitment to working in close collaboration with government officials, industry peers, and communities to share successes and encourage good relations, Omnova said.
The plant received the award for its WEST (Waste and Environmental Systems Team) project, which focused on reducing the concentration of odor-causing volatile organic compounds in its wastewater effluent. By retrofitting the plant´s steam stripping column with dual heat exchangers, Omnova was able to reduce the temperature of the facility´s wastewater effluent and decrease the likelihood of the release of odor-causing VOCs from the city sewer system.
The Mogadore plant increased its VOC removal to almost 99 percent, with non-detection in several wastewater samples, the company said.
Omnova makes emulsion polymers, specialty chemicals, decorative and functional surfaces, and single-ply roofing systems for a variety of commercial, industrial and residential end uses.
