Goodyear manufactures a wide variety of hoses: automotive and industrial; high and low pressure; for cold and hot application; chemical, oil and gas resistant; sizes range from under a quarter inch to almost 3 feet diameter; the list goes on and on. Each hose is designed for a specific field application and must meet numerous customer requirements. Customers request a certain life for the product based on the field application. One way to provide requested field life is through preliminary standard or custom-designed screening testing of whole scale product or small scale laboratory samples. Usually it is beneficial to design a special small scale lab test that mimics the field application of each product and reproduces the type of deformation, loads, environmental situation, vibration, chemical resistance and other hose application factors. It is important to select laboratory test factors that truly relate to product field performance. Each predictive method must create the very same failure mode or defect which simulates product field behavior. Properly designed small scale tests save money, reduces development time, and predicts field performance of a hose without building it to full scale. This paper overviews screening tests specially designed for hoses of different field applications and discusses how to select proper test criteria for predictive methods.
