EPDM rubber has been used for many years for demanding under-the-hood applications. EPDM compounds provide one of the most cost-effective means of achieving outstanding heat and weather resistance in elastomeric automotive components. There is continuing pressure on parts suppliers to reduce cost and yet maintain the overall performance requirements. NORDEL™ MG Hydrocarbon Rubber is a new form of EPDM rubber produced by The Dow Chemical Company using Dow’s Constrained Geometry Catalyst (CGC) technology and gas phase process. Very high molecular weight polymers can be produced in a granular form using the catalyst technology and the gas phase process. These products can be highly extended with low cost plasticizers and fillers to provide practical recipes at lower cost. This paper describes the basic properties of some of these very high MW EPDM grades and gives an example of how different grades of NORDEL™ MG are blended together to achieve a balance of physical properties and processing behavior. Through a statistically designed experiment, a predictive compound model has been developed.
