AKRON—A Washington attorney and consultant nominated to the Goodyear board of directors by the United Steelworkers union back in May was elected to a seat Dec. 6.
Michael R. Wessel, an attorney with almost 30 years experience as a policy and international trade adviser and ties to Capitol Hill, particularly as an aide to former House leader Richard Gephardt, becomes the board´s 11th member.
"Mike Wessel has spent many years advising government officials on a wide range of domestic and international issues, including trade, taxation, labor and economic policy," said Robert J. Keegan, Goodyear chairman and CEO. "His deep knowledge will be a significant benefit on our board."
The USW was given the opportunity to nominate a representative to the board via its 2003 master contract settlement with the Akron tire maker. "Mike´s expertise on trade policy and labor issues provides for a keen understanding of the dynamic of globalization and its impact on North American workers," the union said in a Dec. 9 statement.
Wessel is a senior vice president with the Downey McGrath Group Inc., a consulting firm with expertise in government, politics and international affairs.
