GEISMAR, La. (Oct. 20) — An Oct. 19 fire at a Chemtura Corp. EPDM factory in Geismar has stopped production temporarily at all three of the firm´s EPDM plants in Geismar.
The fire started in the corner of one of the plants when a supply of hexane caught fire, according to the company. The blaze was restricted to the plant and extinguished within an hour. Nobody was injured.
"As a safety measure, we closed all three EPDM plants," a company spokesman said.
He said it is unclear how long the units will be closed, but the firm will know more Oct. 21 after investigating the cause. "We will not start any of them up until we feel 100-percent certain that the root cause was found and addressed," the spokesman said, adding that he expects it to be a "matter of days, not weeks."
He did not know how much production is lost each day the units are shut down, but said Chemtura can fill the orders from existing inventory in the meantime.
An adjacent rubber chemicals unit was not affected and remains in operation.
