AKRON (Sept. 22)—Lanxess Corp. has shut down production at its synthetic rubber plant in Orange, Texas, and a chemical plant in Bayport, Texas, and evacuated employees in advance of Hurricane Rita.
Also, Chemical Market Resources´ FlexPO 2005 annual conference on polyolefins and elastomers, scheduled for Sept. 21-22 in Galveston, Texas, has been postponed. The hurricane is expected to come ashore near Galveston this weekend.
Lanxess said it has taken all necessary precautions to safeguard the environment in the event of flooding, and a local crisis management team is monitoring the situation. The firm plans to restart production as soon as the danger has passed.
Lanxess makes various grades of polybutadiene rubber at Orange and maleic anhydride at Baytown.
The actions affect about 300 employees.
